Description: Internal audit (IA) projects typically focus on evaluating the risks and operational effectiveness of a company’s technological, regulatory/compliance, and/or financial processes and procedures. Because LDTI and IFRS 17 compliance will require extensive rewiring of existing and possibly the implementation of new processes and procedures to comply with the new accounting requirements, IA will be critical in conducting the initial risk assessment of these changes, monitoring of the process changeover, and conducting a post-implementation validation after conversion. Explore many specific areas that will be impacted, highlight those aspects likely to be under the IA magnifying glass, and find out how you can best prepare your IA teams to understand the changes and expedite the testing timeframes of their audits. Description: "Are you a health actuary affected by recent developments in business practices and accounting standards that have created situations in which you may be involved in estimating balances under accounting rules that differ from those typically used by insurers? In this session you will learn about situations where non-insurance accounting regimes may intersect actuarial practice, with an intended focus on two particular topics. One topic is general accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for insurance brokers under ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition) for commissions on Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement contracts, where the broker may get to recognize the expected value of all future commissions on a contract as revenue when the contract is placed. The other topic is GAAP under ASC 460 (Guarantees) in situations where a non-provider entity is bearing risk related to health care services, which can occur under the CMS Direct Contracting/ACO REACH model or under private sector care coordination contracts."

Description: Health insurance company assets and liabilities have evolved since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law in March 2010. The ACA fundamentally rearranged how commercial health insurance is funded by integrating federal premium subsidies and pass-throughs together with a marketplace interwoven with transfer payments among stakeholders. The impacts of these programs can be seen in specific accounting items on the balance sheets of health insurance companies over the past 10 years. Their emergence follows three primary trends: (1) balance sheet items tend to be larger and take longer to settle, (2) there are more interactions among items, and (3) the final settlement amounts are more uncertain.
